My Lords would then propose to continue to pay

the present rent at the rate of about £420 per annum.

My Lords consider that, as the object they have in view is the maritime protection of the Colony and its trade, their use of the land for a different purpose than that for which it was originally rented should not cause any fresh

burden on Navy Votes.

My Lords understand that His Excellency The

Governor of Hong Kong is at present in this country,

and

if the Secretary of State considered it desirable, Their Lordships would be glad to confer with His Excellency on

the subject at an early date.
